The thing about vampires is that when they die they get reincarnated so several millennia later they would come back as humans because vampires don't get to pass on into the next world. They are damned and thus forever cursed to relive everything over and over again. Particularly because vampires always die violent deaths this is a vicious cycle especially for the turned vampires who usually go through a whole multitude of deaths and bloodshed only to relive it in the next cycle. The only people who are spared this are the original vampires since they are the originals and cannot die forever. Klaus and Caroline (in her past life) had met when he was still on the run from the Hunter (the one we now know as Michael). She was a young vampire then who was turned by accident when her fiancé (a politician’s son) pissed off some vengeful vampires. Horrified with what she’s become she ran away and meets Klaus. They become close because after killing Rebekah he’s all alone and so is she so they kind of fit together. Only Michael finds out about her connection with Klaus she is murdered. This is when Klaus decides he’s done running and wants revenge. The only problem is he needs to unleash his werewolf side in order to be strong enough to extract that revenge. So he spends the 90 years trying to break that curse and waiting for whenever she comes back. Only once he’s in Mystic Falls he realizes that she’s already been reincarnated. So now he wants to find her but is conflicted with what would happen if she does and Michael finds them again. So he has his witches go kidnap her at the hospital only Tyler is there at well so they have to take him and then Damon ruins everything by freeing them because he thought they were meant to be the vampire and werewolf pair for the sacrifice.
