HISTORY MEME : (1/9) Kings/Queens - Queen Razia Sultan

Raziyya al-Din (1205 – October 13, 1240) usually referred to in history as Razia Sultan, was the Queen of Delhi in India from 1236 to May 1240. Like some other Muslim princesses of the time, she was trained to lead armies and administer kingdoms if necessary. Razia Sultana was the only woman ruler of both the Sultanate and the Mughal period. She succeeded her father Shams-ud-din Iltutmish to the Sultanate of Delhi in 1236. Iltutmish became the first sultan to appoint a woman as his successor when he designated his daughter Razia as his heir apparent. She dressed like a man and sat in open durbar. She was an efficient ruler and possessed all the qualities of a Monarch. As a child and adolescent, Razia had little contact with the women of the harem, so she had not learnt the customary behavior of women in the Muslim society that she was born into. As Sultan, Razia preferred a man’s tunic and headdress; and contrary to custom, she would later show her face when she rode an elephant into battle at the head of her army. (+)

For me I watch t.v. with the eye of someone with nigh close to an associates in theatre (I was one class short of this), I look at placement of objects, repeated symbolism, as well as thematic aspects to scenes. I also look at t.v. through someone who’s had several English courses where we pick apart symbolism and set up in novels. It’s hard to just sit back and enjoy an episode of anything anymore without picking apart scenes. And this is one that’s sort of been stewing in the back of my mind for months now.

Picture 1) We see dice on the table - a game of “fortune” and possible “liar’s dice” ( a popular pirate and tavern game), we also see a dark set up, its night, the lady beside Killian is also darker, and they’re drinking. It’s the first time we encounter Killian Jones. The first, and memorable, scene he’s in.

Picture 2) We see Emma return with a drink for Killian, he makes a quip about fortune playing in his favor and Emma points out she’s good at telling if someone’s lying. Not only this, but this scene is in stark contrast to its daytime, its bright, and she’s blond and light in comparison to Milah.

But, there’s also storytelling aspects to this. Milah’s scene shows her out carousing with pirates, ignoring her duties as a mother - while Emma’s scene shows her trying to find her way back to her son and meeting a pirate in an unconventional way.

There’s just a lot of paralleling being done between these two episodes that has been nagging at me.

- Are we going to talk about the fact that Joan has discussed that conversation with him?

We know she was angry and kept it all bottled up in the restaurant but when she finally got back to Sherlock she must have let lose about what Moriarty said. I’m guessing we caught the end of it in Gregson’s office.

I think she was especially mad about being called a mascot; that’s why he picks up on it in his confrontation with Moriarty, because it upset Joan the most, so he takes the thing that hurt her and throws it back in Moriarty’s face to prove Joan’s power, to use the insult as a tool of Joan’s power.

In writing everything is done with a purpose; there are no accidents. “The Mascot.” is it’s own sentence to truely emphasise Joan’s place in this world, because if you’ve made it through 24 episodes and still think Joan Watson is a sidekick, this scene proves you very much wrong.

This one line takes Sherlock and Joan’s equality and brands it into the very heart of the show: In Elementary, there’s no such thing as a sidekick.
